Gurdwara Janam Asthan, located in Nankana Sahib, Pakistan, is one of the most sacred Sikh shrines. It marks the birthplace of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the founder of Sikhism, who was born here on April 15, 1469. The Gurdwara holds immense religious and historical significance, attracting Sikh pilgrims from all over the world.
The site of Guru Nanak’s birth became a place of reverence soon after his lifetime. However, the formal establishment of Gurdwara Janam Asthan took place in the 16th and 17th centuries, as Sikhism grew under the guidance of the later Gurus.
During the Mughal and later Sikh rule, this site remained protected and honored. However, during British rule in India, the management of Sikh Gurdwaras, including this one, was often under Mahants (priests), who were sometimes accused of mismanagement and corruption.

History of Gurdwara Janam Asthan, Nankana Sahib
One of the most significant events in the history of Gurdwara Janam Asthan was the Nankana Sahib Massacre of 1921.
- At the time, the gurdwara was under the control of Mahant Narain Das, who was accused of misusing the shrine’s wealth and power.
- The Akali Movement, a Sikh reformist movement, sought to free the gurdwara from his control and restore proper Sikh management.
- On February 20, 1921, a group of peaceful Sikh reformers, led by Bhai Lachhman Singh, entered the gurdwara to take control.
- Mahant Narain Das and his hired men attacked the unarmed Sikhs, killing over 260 of them in a brutal massacre.
This tragic event became a turning point in Sikh history, leading to the Gurdwara Reform Movement and the eventual establishment of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) to manage Sikh shrines.
